Clay Curt
This was created as a gift for an employer of mine. Every year I try to do something different as a gift for Christmas. I decided to do a caricature-sculpture since he has a great sense of humor and is a family man. So something fun and that tells a little about the man himself would be this years gift (2009).
First I sketched a caricature from photo's sent from his wife. After getting the look, I sketched a quick pose of him holding a Corona beer in one hand (his favorite beer) and holding a golf club in the other. He is standing in one of his more popular fiberglass pool shells (he is a fiberglass opol amnufacturer), and wearing a Tampa Ray's shirt, and Tampa Buchaneers shorts
.This was formed from a wire skeleton shaped into the pose. I made two layers for the pool. One for the base of the skeleton to rest on, and then the top section of the pool to cover the base of the base of the skeleton and to carve out the inside portion of the pool. The rest of the figure was carved ccording to the sketch, imagination, and a lot of eye straining detail.
I used Sculpey clay so I could bake it, wrapping the thinner sections in tin foil so they would not burn.
The white clay figure (left) is the finished baked sculpture. I am currently hand painting the sculpture and will add that to the rotating virtual sculpture next week.
